No More Checks for State Tax Refunds — Starting this year, Virginia is no longer sending checks for state tax refunds. Instead, the Commonwealth will only issue refunds by direct deposit or by prepaid debit card. The debit cards are issued by a vendor at no cost to the state; the change is expected to save taxpayers about $200,000 in printing and mailing costs. [Virginia Dept. of Taxation]

Jobs, Wages Decline in Arlington — While wages in Arlington remain high, average wages and the number of jobs in Arlington both declined in the second quarter of 2012, according to new federal data. The decline is worrying some local real estate developers. [Sun Gazette]

Ovechkin Collides With Teammate at Kettler — At a practice yesterday morning at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Ballston, Capitals star winger Alex Ovechkin and center Marcus Johansson collided at mid-ice. The collision sent both players to the ground, but they’re both said to be “okay.” [CSN Washington, Washington Post]

Anyone else experience low water pressure in the Penrose, Columbia Hts, CoPi (ugh) neighborhoods this morning?

    • Buknoy

YES! And my water was brown…

So glad to see this post. I was afraid I had plumbing issues. To answer your question, yes I had really low pressure this morning.

    • Douglas Parker

You can add Douglas Park to that list. Water pressure is currently about half of normal.

    • SteveP

Further down the Pike, I had normal water pressure in Barcroft.

    • Looks like it hit my neighborhood (Buckingham), too.

    • water water everywhere no drop to be found

Low water pressure in Fairlington, too

  • UA

Had the same problem in the Pike & Glebe area. Called the city, pressure problems reported all over the area and they are working on it.

  • Jessica

had no pressure in fairlington either.

  • Monty

Called county heard it was a water main issue…maybe a break. County Arlington Forest

    • FrenchyB

Heard this as well from a friend who lives in Arlington Forest.

  • monty

    *count Arlington Forest

  • David

We had issues all the way up in Buckingham, just north of Rt. 50.

Interesting that the state also stopped offering its free on-line income tax filing. Now you have to either pay for it through a private party like Quicken or do it on paper.

    • ARL-VA

Online tax providers were livid about Virginia’s free online tax filing system. They complained and the state removed the system.

      • Neighbor

I can only imagine that this “savings” to the state for using prepaid cards is coming at a cost to the taxpayer. Does anyone know what the fee structure is?

        • Kevin

Banks offer to do it for free to get their cards into consumers hands. They are able to charge merchants who accept those cards high fees. So taxpayers don’t pay extra directly, but retailers fees could be passed on to everyone.

      • drax

Yep. You can’t have the interests of the taxpayers served when some private company’s interests are at stake!

  • DarkHeart

So, the softball game was rained out?

  • Obligatory Donaldson Run Comment

Plenty of water here, and not a cloud in the sky!

Re job numbers: 2nd quarter of 2012 is nearly a year ago. Weren’t a lot of offices still moving as part of the BRAC during that time? I know there’s a lot of office space that’s now empty in Rosslyn and Crystal City (and probably others) due to that.

  • Wilbur

Ah ha ha ha ha ha!!!!! Two hockey players fell on their ass on the ice…. and that makes a headline on ARLNOW?????? Oh this site has gone down the tubes.

    • Jake

I agree. In other news sports teams practiced and there was contact between players. So. Not. News.
