Arlington-based cafe with focus on community expands into D.C.

Good Company Doughnuts and Cafe is about to open another location, this time in D.C.

The Arlington-born, all-day cafe, also known as GoCoDough, has a new spot near the Waterfront Metro station in the Westerly apartment building at 1000 4th Street SW. The cafe is currently under construction, slated to open in early May, owners Charles Kachadoorian and Kate Murphy said.

“We’re not going to say anything, we’ll just open the doors and there will be a little open sign,” said Murphy.

The owners have some experience at this.

The brother-sister duo grew up in the restaurant business and have three other locations in Arlington — the original at 672 N. Glebe Road in Ballston, which proved successful despite a challenging location, and two at Amazon’s HQ2 in Pentagon City. The GoCoDough concept is based on a donut shop that Murphy used to own with her husband in New Hampshire.

“We wanted to be a neighborhood spot,” said Kachadoorian. “We wanted to do the donuts with coffee, and have things that would appeal to parents that brought their kids in, and offer good food that we love.”

The cafes already hold a variety of community events, such as a donut decorating event for kids and coffee tasting for adults.

“We try to do things to include the community in our cafe,” said Murphy. “Just a few things so people don’t just come to spend their money to buy the food, but so they can get to know the whole business.”

The cafe also provides free donut holes for participants in the Arlington Turkey Trot. Kachadoorian jokes about how eager runners are to gobble up the treats.

“It’s kind of like the ‘Walking Dead’ attacking you when they finish the race,” he said.

They owners said they are happy with GoCoDough’s community involvement with the three other locations and they look to doing the same in D.C.

“We are grateful that we are in this position, striking into D.C.,” said Kachadoorian. “We’ll see how it goes there, hopefully we’ll make some new friends over there and get ingrained with that community too.”
