Streetscape upgrades may be coming to busy intersections along George Mason Drive and S. Carlin Springs Road.
A $1.7 million contract for improved sidewalks and better traffic signals is slated to go before the Arlington County Board on Saturday. Under consideration are the intersections of S. Carlin Springs at 3rd Street S. and Arlington Blvd at N./S. George Mason Drive.
A county report highlights current conditions of traffic lights on span wire, long pedestrian crossings, narrow sidewalks and a lack of wheelchair-accessible ramps. The George Mason Drive intersections appear to have traffic signals on older mast arms.
“The proposed sidewalks, ADA curb ramps, high-visibility crosswalks, and traffic signal upgrade will provide safe, accessible, and user-friendly intersections,” the report says.
The Carlin Springs intersection in question, near Kenmore Middle School, is on a portion of the road noted for safety concerns.
The improvements promise “safe and practical pedestrian facilities.” The contract with Ardent Company, LLC would include a $1.5 million initial allocation plus a $200,000 contingency.
This project is among several intersection upgrades that Arlington is planning or currently undertaking. It is expected to wrap up later this summer, according to a project list last updated in April.
