After narrowly missing out on an undefeated season, the Yorktown High School girls lacrosse team can claim a higher title: state champions.
The team defeated Fairfax County’s Robinson Secondary School in Richmond on Saturday, earning the school’s second title in three seasons.
The Patriots, who lost only once this year (to Robinson, back in March), took an early lead and never let go, coasting to a 22-10 victory.

Yorktown’s success was anything but guaranteed. After winning the state title in 2022, the team failed to qualify for the state tournament last season.
“It kind of feels like a dream,” head coach Jenny Keimig told the Washington Post. “This is something that we wanted from the very start of the season.”
The Patriots’ run to states began last month, when Yorktown first claimed the district championship over McLean’s Langley High School. The team went on to defeat Reston’s South Lakes High School in the regional championship.
Yorktown edged out a 9-8 victory in the state quarterfinal before handily winning their final two games, securing the girls’ second lacrosse title and the school’s third total lacrosse championship.
Prior to Saturday’s championship game, the Patriots received an escort from Arlington County police.
