The Democratic primary for one open Arlington County Board seat got off to a slow start today.
As of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, only about 3.7% of Arlington registered voters had cast ballots in the Democratic race today. About 5.2% of the county voted early or by mail, according to the county’s election dashboard.
“I think [turnout] is on par with what we were expecting,” said elections office spokesperson Tania Griffin.
Polling places, which opened at 6 a.m., will remain open until 7 p.m. in all 54 of Arlington’s precincts. More turnout information will be available later today, although final results will not be available until later in the week as election personnel tabulate the ranked-choice votes.
Five candidates — James DeVita, Julie Farnam, Natalie Roy, Tenley Peterson and JD Spain — are vying for the Democratic nod, which tends to be a reliable predictor of the November general election outcome.
An even more lightly attended Republican primary for the U.S. Senate is also happening. About 0.47% of Arlington cast votes in that race today, as of 1:30 p.m.
There have been no issues of note at the polls, officials said.
“It’s been a smooth day so far,” Griffin said.
1:30pm turnout estimates show ~3.7% of Arlington has voted in the Democratic Primary and ~0.47% in the Republican Primary. This does not include voters who voted early or by mail.#ArlingtonVotes #Vote2024
