Wagamama opening ‘sooner rather than later’ this summer in Clarendon

Wagamama’s grand opening in Clarendon is on the horizon.

No, for real this time.

The international chain of Asian-inspired restaurants intends to open “sooner rather than later” this summer at 2950 Clarendon Blvd, in the words of a source close to the project. The restaurant is already outfitted with tables, decor, signage and more, but a liquor license application is still pending, according to Virginia ABC.

Preliminary plans for a grand opening event have appeared on the company’s website, but a specific date has yet to be publicly announced. An updated timeline is expected to be made public in the next few weeks, a company spokesperson said.

Wagamama initially hoped to open the restaurant during the summer of 2022 before encountering an assortment of delays. The most recent estimate eyed an opening this month, but time is quickly running out to meet that goal.

The British chain has more than 200 locations worldwide. Wagamama’s Clarendon location will be the first in the D.C. area and the company’s eighth in the United States.

The restaurant features “Asian food inspired by the flavors of Japan,” such as grilled duck ramen and chicken pad thai. Wagamama’s menu also includes gyoza, boba tea, sake and other traditional offerings.
