NEW: Large power outage reported in Ballston and Virginia Square

Outage map as of 6:45 p.m. (via Dominion)

Nearly 3,000 residences and businesses were without power in the Ballston and Virginia Square area Monday evening.

That was according to Dominion’s outage map at 6:45 p.m.

It’s unclear what caused the outage, which was also affecting parts of the Ashton Heights neighborhood. One reader told ARLnow just after 6 p.m. that Ballston Quarter mall was without power.

“Looks like the blocks Ballston mall occupied and up thru Wilson are out of power, shops/restaurants closed,” the tipster said.

The outage did not appear to be related to the severe warned thunderstorm that ended up staying north of Arlington.

As of 8:30 p.m., the outage had shrunk to about 600 Dominion customers. Power restoration for them is now estimated between midnight and 3 a.m., according to the power company.
