Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for Arlington

Arlington County is under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 6 p.m. Monday.

A strong storm is approaching from the northwest, packing gusty, damaging winds and lots of lightning.

The National Weather Service in Sterling Virginia has issued a

* Severe Thunderstorm Warning […]

* Until 600 PM EDT.

* At 513 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Great Falls, moving east at 25 mph.

HAZARD…60 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE…Trained weather spotters reported numerous downed trees and power lines in Loudoun County with this storm.

IMPACT…Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall. This could injure those outdoors, as well as
damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles.

* Locations impacted include… Arlington, Alexandria, Germantown, Rockville, Bethesda, Gaithersburg, Reston, Annandale, College Park, Herndon, Greenbelt, Langley Park, Beltsville, Vienna, Falls Church, Lowes Island, Bladensburg, Mantua, Pimmit Hills, and National Harbor.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

To report severe weather, contact your nearest law enforcement agency. They will send your report to the National Weather Service office in Sterling Virginia.

Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
