A gas leak prompted the complete closure of a section of Columbia Pike during Thursday’s evening rush hour.
Fire department units were dispatched to the scene around 4:45 p.m, leading to Pike being shut down between S. Courthouse Road and S. Scott Street.
Initial reports suggested the leak was below the roadway and Washington Gas crews were working to access it and stop the leak.
The Arlington County Fire Department said no gas was detected in nearby buildings, including a number of large apartment buildings along the Pike.
The leak was contained shortly before 6 p.m. and the roadway reopened around 6:30 p.m.
FINAL: Leak is contained, fire department resources are clearing the scene. Estimated roadway closures will last an additional 30-40 minutes.
