UPDATE: Northbound GW Parkway weekend closure postponed

Update on 9/27/24 — The lane closure for this weekend has been cancelled due to rain. From the National Park Service:

Due to inclement weather, the scheduled closure of the northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) between Spout Run Parkway and Windy Run Bridge has been cancelled for this weekend. One northbound and southbound lane will remain open in each direction. Thank you for your patience as we continue rehabilitation.

Earlier: The northbound lanes of the GW Parkway will close this weekend for paving work.

Weather permitting, the closure is set to take place from 2 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 28) between the Spout Run Parkway in Arlington and Windy Run in McLean.

During that time, traffic will be detoured through parts of northern Arlington. The detour runs from the Spout Run Parkway to Langston Blvd to Old Dominion Drive to N. Glebe Road to Chain Bridge Road.

One lane of the southbound GW Parkway will remain open.

In the event of rain, the work will be rescheduled for either Sunday or the following weekend. The paving is taking place as part of the National Park Services’ ongoing, major rehabilitation project for the northern GW Parkway.

More, below, from an NPS press release.

The National Park Service (NPS) will temporarily close the northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) between Spout Run Parkway and Windy Run Bridge from 2 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 28. This is to complete roadway paving activities and other required rehabilitation work.

During the closures, all northbound GWMP traffic must exit at Spout Run Parkway and follow detour signs to Route 123 as shown on the map below. One southbound lane on GWMP will stay open.

All work is weather permitting and subject to change. If it rains or there is some other bad weather, the work and closures will be rescheduled to the following Sunday or the next weekend. Information on all upcoming parkway and ramp closures will be provided via email ahead of each closure. The ramp from northbound GWMP to southbound Route 123 remains closed through early October for excavation, curb work, roadway demolition, and asphalt paving. Visit our website for more information on daily lane and ramp closures.

To keep everyone safe on the parkway, motorists should stay alert when driving along the parkway, watch out for construction crews and vehicles, and respect the 40-mph speed limit. Variable message boards and orange construction signage are posted along the parkway and on Route 123 for updated directions. Commercial trucks remain prohibited on the north parkway.

To avoid traffic delays on the northern section of the parkway, drivers should consider alternate routes and plan for additional travel time. All lane closure hours, bridge work, and general construction information is available on our website.
