El Fuego in Lyon Park has closed after about six years in business there.
The Peruvian restaurant’s signage has been removed from 2300 N. Pershing Drive and the interior appears empty. Comments on the establishment’s Instagram page suggest it closed at least five weeks ago.
El Fuego founder Manny Alfaro started the eatery as a food truck around 2010, combining traditional Peruvian food with some Chinese and Japanese influences. The restaurant spent several years on the road before settling down at the Lyon Park address in fall 2018.
Alfaro made an appearance on Food Network in 2020, representing El Fuego in an episode of “Guy’s Grocery Games” and ultimately winning the show’s cooking competition.
The restaurant changed owners the next year, in 2021, and garnered a write up from Washington Post food critic Tim Carman.
A few doors down from the now-shuttered El Fuego, the former location of Astor Mediterranean also remains vacant.
