With earlier sunsets ahead, two Arlington County organizations are distributing free bike lights, reflective vests and other safety gear this week.
Representatives from BikeArlington and WalkArlington be handing out gear from 4-6 p.m. at “Lighten Up, Arlington!” events on the following dates.
- Tomorrow (Tuesday): Curtis Trail in Rosslyn, near the Bikeometer bike counter. Langston Blvd and N. Lynn Street
- Wednesday: Water Park in Crystal City, near the Mount Vernon Trail. 1601 Crystal Drive
- Friday: Columbia Pike at the Washington & Old Dominion Trail
Daylight savings time ends this Sunday, Nov. 3, prompting clocks to “fall back” one hour for a sunset at 5:03 p.m. on Sunday.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends cyclists wear reflective gear at night and equip their bicycles with white front lights, red rear lights and reflectors.
In 2023, 33% of all crashes in Arlington happened at night, according to county Vision Zero data.
