UPDATED: First flakes of the season fall Friday morning

Update: Snow did, in fact, fall for around an hour in Arlington before transitioning to rain shortly before noon.

Earlier: Arlington could see its first snowflakes of the season Friday morning, though any frozen precipitation is unlikely to stick.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a chance of snow showers before 10 a.m., followed by a wintry mix transitioning to all rain by noon. While the chance of precipitation is 70%, little to no snow accumulation is expected given temperatures above freezing.

After a low of 32 in the morning, Friday’s high will reach about 45 degrees, with blustery conditions throughout the day. West winds of 9-15 mph and gusts up to 24 mph will make it feel colder.

Any precipitation is expected to taper off by Friday evening, with clearing skies overnight and a low around 38.

The brief appearance of snow would mark a somewhat early start of wintry weather in Arlington compared to recent years. The average date for the first measurable snowfall in the D.C. area is December 12.
