Clarendon Irish pub plans expansion into former Spirits of ’76 spot

O’Sullivan’s Irish Pub in Clarendon is planning to open a new room in a vacant, adjacent storefront.

The business applied for a permit last week for a commercial addition at 3211 Washington Blvd, formerly home to The Spirits of ’76, an Americana-themed bar that closed in fall 2020.

O’Sullivan’s owner Anselm Griffiths said the pub hopes to add an extra bar and dining service in the nearly 2,000-square-foot space.

“It’s going to be a cozy little bar,” Griffiths told ARLnow. “In Ireland, there’s a concept of a snug — small little rooms off the end of the bar — so we’re going to call the room the snug.”

Griffiths said “the snug” will be a casual, quiet space for patrons, kept separate from the main restaurant and its live music.

The plans require mechanical, electrical and plumbing work, according to permitting records. The business is still receiving permits for the project and it is unknown when construction will start, Griffiths said.

O’Sullivan’s last expanded a little over a decade ago, when it branched out into two nearby storefronts at 3207 Washington Blvd. Completed in 2013, the project broadened the pub’s reach from Washington Blvd up to the corner at N. Irving Street.
