Rosslyn Tunnel upgrades on track to finish by mid-2025

Improvements to the Rosslyn Tunnel carrying I-66 under the neighborhood are expected to wrap up next year.

The rehabilitation project by the Virginia Department of Transportation, which began construction in fall 2022, is bringing the following upgrades.

  • Removing the existing tunnel ceiling to improve long-term maintenance
  • Replacing loose or damaged ceiling tiles
  • Upgrading electrical systems
  • Installing a new fireproofing system
  • Repairing steel beams, abutment and pier concrete, and joints
  • Cleaning and repairing bearings
  • Replacing the tunnel lighting system

The undertaking is scheduled to finish by summer 2025, a representative from VDOT Northern Virginia told ARLnow.

The $37.7 million project is intended to improve safety and extend the life of the tunnel, which averages around 68,000 vehicles per day under N. Nash Street, Fort Myer Drive, N. Lynn Street and Gateway Park.

The last few years of construction have prompted some lane closures on I-66, but mostly during overnight hours.

This article has been updated with revised information from VDOT on the project’s expected timeline.
