Bullet found in Arlington elementary school classroom

A bullet was found in an elementary school classroom yesterday afternoon and it’s unclear how it got there.

Police were called to Arlington Traditional School, at 1030 N. McKinley Road, around 12:45 p.m. Monday after a student reportedly found a bullet in a fourth-grade classroom. So far, the investigation has not revealed where the bullet came from.

“Following our initial investigation, we have not identified the source of the bullet and did not find any threat to school safety,” the school’s principal said in an email to families Monday afternoon.

A police report has been filed, the principal noted.

The full email is below.

Dear Families,

I am writing to inform you about an incident that occurred this afternoon in a fourth-grade classroom. During class, a student approached their teacher and turned in a bullet they found on the classroom carpet. I want to emphasize that all students are safe, and the situation was immediately addressed to ensure everyone’s safety.

Our staff promptly notified the Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) non-emergency line. An officer reported to the school and the bullet was turned over to them and a report was filed. We also spoke with students in the classroom to gather more information about how the bullet was brought to school and to ensure we address any related concerns.

Following our initial investigation, we have not identified the source of the bullet and did not find any threat to school safety. We take every report seriously, and I appreciate the immediate actions of our students and staff to report what they found. Tomorrow morning, our team will be meeting with the affected classroom to review the incident and how following proper safety reporting protocols led to our ability to take swift action. I will be following up with the families of the affected classroom separately.

Please know that safety is always our top priority, and we will continue to follow established protocols to maintain a secure learning environment for all students. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me directly at [email protected] or the school office at 703-228-6290.

Thank you for your understanding and partnership.

Sincerely,

Sam Podbelski,
Principal
