Mah-Ze-Dahr cafe closes in Crystal City after three and a half years

The restaurant and bakery Mah-Ze-Dahr has closed in Crystal City after three and a half years.

The New York City-based cafe, which opened in June 2021, shuttered at 1550 Crystal Drive last Thursday. It was the bakery’s last location in the D.C. area.

The cafe was Mah-Ze-Dahr’s largest location

  • “We have made the difficult decision to close this location,” a storefront message reads. “We have greatly appreciated having the opportunity to share the magic of Mah-Ze-Dahr with the National Landing community.”
  • The cafe serving breakfast and lunch dishes weathered many economic challenges during the pandemic, expanding its dining menu in summer 2023.
  • Employees in Crystal City were offered new roles at other establishments by D.C.-area restaurant operator Knead Hospitality + Design, according to an Instagram post from the cafe.

Property owner JBG Smith declined to comment. Knead Hospitality + Design did not respond to requests for comment.
