A teenage girl suffered significant injuries after being struck by a driver while on her way to school.
The crash happened around 7:15 a.m. this morning (Friday) at the intersection of N. Jefferson Street and 15th Street N., a few blocks from Swanson Middle School, in the Westover area.
The girl, said to be a seventh grade student at Swanson, was rushed to a local trauma center for treatment of her injuries. She was last reported to be in stable condition, according to an Arlington County police spokesperson.
The driver was not cited as a preliminary investigation found that the girl went through a stop sign before being struck in the intersection, according to police. The intersection only has a two-way stop.
More, below, from ACPD.
At approximately 7:19 a.m. on April 25, police were dispatched to the report of a crash with injuries at N. Jefferson Street and 15th Street N. The preliminary investigation indicates a bicyclist was traveling on 15th Street N. when they entered the intersection with N. Jefferson Street and were struck by a motorist. The motorist remained on scene. The bicyclist, a juvenile female in her teens, was transported to an area hospital. She is in stable condition with injuries considered non-life-threatening. The preliminary investigation indicates the bicyclist did not stop at the stop sign prior to entering the intersection. No citations were issued as a result of the crash.
A tipster who identified himself as an advocate for street safety in the neighborhood said he and other residents have “tried for years to get this intersection to be a four way stop, but the County has not acted.”
“Traffic on Jefferson does not stop and they are going downhill both direction,” he wrote. “The County needs to act… and now we really need the community to rally.”
