Arlington animal rescue puts fired feds to work fostering pets

As plenty of former federal workers are likely feeling down, a local animal rescue organization wants to help lift some spirits.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue — a regional nonprofit based along Langston Blvd in Arlington’s Yorktown neighborhood — is asking out-of-work federal employees to consider fostering a cat or dog.

Lucky Dog said they will provide all supplies needed for federal workers recently laid off to become fosters.

“Knowing how important animal companionship can be for people experiencing difficult times, Lucky Dog is providing recently laid-off employees with all the supplies needed to care for their foster dog or cat,” the organization said. “While periods of major life disruptions may not be ideal for adding a new family member permanently, it could be the perfect time to foster a pet.”

Lucky Dog said it will provide fosters with food, toys, bowls, a leash and collar, treats, crates and other supplies.

“We hope to offer a source of comfort to anyone in our community who has lost their job,” said Mirah Horowitz, founder and CEO of Lucky Dog. “During times of loss or hardship, the unconditional love a pet provides — whether it be a foster pet or a forever pet — can make all the difference.”

Potential fosters can learn more about registering at the Lucky Dog website, which has questionnaires for potential dog and cat fosters.

“Former federal employees can save the lives of at-risk dogs and cats who can only be saved from overcrowded shelters if they have a foster willing to take them in,” Horowitz said, “and in return, these pets might just do a little saving of their own.”
