Downed trees, sparking wires amid rain and wind

A soaking rain and gusty winds are causing some tree troubles around Arlington.

Nearly an inch of rain has fallen so far today. Also falling: trees and utility lines.

The northbound lanes of S. Walter Reed Drive were blocked for part of the morning today after a tree fell just before 10 a.m. Lanes were back open as of 12:20 p.m. after crews removed the fallen tree, according to Arlington Alert.

Sparking electrical lines in a Green Valley parking lot, meanwhile, prompted a fire department response to the intersection of 25th Street S. and S. Monroe Street around 10:30 a.m. Firefighters stood by and kept people away from the arcing wires while awaiting the power company.

Then at 1:10 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 3000 block of Military Road, near Zachary Taylor Park, for a report of a tree that came down on the roof of a house.

At 2:15 p.m., another downed tree was reported on the 1800 block of N. Monroe Street, in Cherrydale. The tree is completely blocking the roadway, according to scanner traffic.

No injuries were reported.
