Free Lyft rides will be available this Friday for the Fourth of July, courtesy of a D.C.-area nonprofit.
The SoberRide initiative plans to offer free rides from 4 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Saturday. Participants age 21 and over will be able to use a promo code once to receive a ride worth up to $15.
The Washington Regional Alcohol Program, which attempts to reduce drunk driving in the D.C. region, will post the Lyft promotional code to www.SoberRide.com at 3 p.m. on Friday.
From 2019 to 2023, 38% of traffic fatalities nationwide during the Fourth of July involved drunk driving, according to data shared by WRAP.
“Lyft is dedicated to providing access to reliable and responsible rides, and we’re proud to partner with programs like WRAP to offer Lyft as an alternative to impaired driving,” Kamillah Wood, Lyft’s director of public policy for community safety, said in a release.
Operating annually during holidays and festivities, the SoberRide program has provided nearly 95,000 free rides home in the D.C. area since its inception in 1991.
