Ikea is closing its Pentagon City location this fall.
The Swedish furniture store at 1201 S. Hayes Street will remain open until Nov. 30 as the company opens another “plan-and-order” store in Georgetown, the Washington Business Journal reported yesterday (Thursday).
“We are creating a better IKEA and that means continually evolving in a rapidly changing retail landscape to ensure we remain accessible, affordable, and sustainable for our customers,” CEO and chief sustainability officer Javier Quiñones told that publication.
Ikea spent just two years in its 5,000-square-foot space at Pentagon Centre, next to Marshalls, Five Below and CVS Pharmacy. When it opened in August 2023, it was the brand’s only small-format, plan-and-order location in the D.C. region.
Unlike Ikea’s traditional large-format warehouse stores, this configuration only allows customers to order items — like kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture and fixtures — for delivery.
Ikea’s new Georgetown shop, set to open Wednesday, Nov. 5, is located in a 7,049-square-foot-space at 3307 M Street NW, near the Key Bridge. It replaces Todd Snyder Menswear.
This will be D.C.’s only Ikea. The retailer has other Virginia locations in Woodbridge and Fairfax County.
