Ballston farmers market to stay open year round

The farmers market in Ballston is shifting to stay open all year long, allowing shoppers to continue visiting through the winter.

The Freshfarm Ballston Market, located at 901 N. Taylor Street, will be open from 3-6 p.m. during the winter season, just an hour shorter than its hours of 3-7 p.m. between April and November, the Ballston BID announced yesterday (Monday).

“Farmers markets are more than just places to shop — they help define a neighborhood and bring people together,” Ballston BID CEO Danette Nguyen said in a press release. “Expanding the market to operate year-round strengthens Ballston as a welcoming destination for everyone who spends time here.”

The farmers market has operated at Welburn Square — across N. Stuart Street from the Ballston Metro station — since 2012. Freshfarm’s website lists a total of 20 vendors at the market, offers goods ranging from empanadas to pastries to microgreens.

“This move is an exciting deepening of our mission to build a more resilient and equitable food system,” Freshfarm executive director Cat Oakar said.

At this week’s market, shoppers who spend $10 will receive a complimentary drink ticket to use at the event’s beer and wine garden. Attendees will also receive a $5 market coupon that can be used at any stand from January to March.
