Nearly 7,000 homes and businesses are without power in and around Pentagon City on a frigid Wednesday morning.
The outage was first reported shortly after 8:30 a.m., encompassing parts of Pentagon City, Crystal City, Aurora Highlands and Arlington Ridge. In all, 6,902 Dominion customers were without power, according to the utility’s website.
Public safety radio traffic reported multiple traffic lights out in the area, including at the busy intersection of Army Navy Drive and S. Hayes Street, and at least one associated crash. There were also instances of people trapped in stuck elevators, including at the Macy’s in the darkened Pentagon City mall, as well as various alarms going off.
Gunston Middle School and Oakridge Elementary initially lost power “but it has since been restored,” said Arlington Public Schools spokesman Frank Bellavia.
“We are checking systems to make sure everything is back up,” he added. “Phones are still out at both schools. Families can call 703-228-8000 option 9 if families need to reach their children’s school.”
As of 9:30 a.m., Dominion was estimating a restoration time between 12-4 p.m. The cause of the outage was still listed as “pending investigation.”
