The Garage Racing National Championships are returning to Crystal City for the 12th year this February.
The unconventional bike racing event, which takes place in the garage under 201 12th Street S., is happening on Feb. 21.
Consisting of 10 different races held solely inside a parking garage — and not sanctioned by USA Cycling — the event brings more than just the thrill of rooting for cyclists crossing the finish line, BID deputy executive director Rob Mandle said.
“It’s about creating something unexpected that welcomes everyone,” Mandle said. “Garage Racing reflects the energy and innovation happening across National Landing, where new ideas are celebrated, put into motion and shared amongst the community.”
The races are known for their inclusiveness, with options for men, women and non-binary racers, those who are new to cycling and those with years of experience. The day’s festivities will be capped with the Anything Goes Finale, where “creativity and costumes reign,” the event’s website says.
The event’s full schedule is below, subject to change.

“Garage Racing brings a level of energy and originality you don’t see in traditional cycling events,” said Bill Schieken, owner of biking media company CXHAIRS. “From fixed-gear racing in a parking garage to the Anything Goes race, the championship blends competition with creativity in a way that’s fun and unique.”
Participants only have to pay a registration fee, which is capped at $25. No pre-qualification is required, and registration can be completed online.
Though RSVP is encouraged, the event is free for spectators, who will have space to observe the race along the course. Local food and beverage options, including Acme Pie Co. and Port City Brewing Co., will be available for purchase.
