Takumi Japanese restaurant moves toward opening in Pentagon City

A new Japanese restaurant with a wide menu of sushi options, hot dishes and small plates is planning to open soon in Pentagon City.

Signage for Takumi, a bistro and bar that has been in the works since early 2025, has appeared at 1100 S. Hayes Street, next door to Tous les Jours bakery and cafe.

The local chain — which has other locations in Navy Yard, Bethesda and Columbia, Md. — posted on social media yesterday (Monday), announcing that the new spot was “coming soon.”

“A brand new Takumi location is arriving at Pentagon City Mall, bringing your favorite sushi, cocktails, and dining experience even closer to you,” the business wrote. “Whether you’re shopping, meeting friends, or looking for your next favorite dinner spot, we’ve got something special in store.”

A phone number associated with the location didn’t appear to be in service, and a mall spokesperson did not respond to a request for more information on the planned opening date.

Takumi originally targeted an opening in summer 2025, promising to bring “a unique twist on the sushi experience” to the space formerly home to Rosa Mexicano, which closed in February 2024 after a little over a year in business.

The location’s menu is already online and includes a wide range of sushi and sashimi options, along with entrees such as katsu curry, scallop hibachi, chicken teriyaki and blue crab fried rice. Other offerings include kimchi beef ramen, shrimp stir-fried noodle and spicy seafood udon, in addition to an array of appetizers.

“The menu is centered around Japanese cuisine, featuring a strong selection of sushi and sashimi that highlights precision cutting, freshness, and balance of flavor,” says a webpage for the location. “Alongside traditional Japanese offerings, the restaurant also incorporates broader Asian influences through its hot dishes and small plates, creating a diverse izakaya-style experience where sharing is a key part of the meal.”

Takumi plans to offer sushi bar entrees including a sashimi dinner for $35, or a sushi and sashimi combo for two for $80. For a real treat, a 10-piece omakase nigiri set — with Wagyu beef, Hokkaido uni, scallop, O-toro, red shrimp and daily specials — will be available for $65.

Planned drink options include sake, Japanese beers and craft cocktails.

“Combined with a modern, energetic dining environment, the restaurant creates a balance between traditional Japanese restraint and the more dynamic, social atmosphere found in contemporary Asian izakaya and fusion dining spaces,” the website says.

The location’s hours are listed as Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m., and Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m.
