New bakery selling bread, pastries and coffee planned in Westover

A new bakery from the team behind Rare Bird Coffee Roasters is on the rise in Westover.

Bryan Becker, who co-founded Rare Bird in Falls Church with his wife, Lara Benenji, in 2017, has been working on a new concept at 5870 Washington Blvd since last summer.

Located next door to Village Sweet, another bakery with a rotating menu of sweet baked goods, the forthcoming storefront will also emphasize flour power — but with more of a savory focus. Becker plans on selling items like hearth loaves, baguettes, rye breads and seeded breads.

“[Village Sweet does] a lot of scones and cakes and things, so we’ll try to stay away from that stuff and stick to, you know, breads and pastries,” Becker told ARLnow.

The project is still solidifying. Becker declined to provide an estimated opening date and didn’t mention a name for the planned establishment.

Becker said the bakery will emphasize local ingredients and will sell some of the same coffee as Rare Bird. The main event, however, will be bread and a limited selection of sweet treats.

“We’re going to try to tailor it to be a little more savory,” Becker said. “We’ll have a few sweet things.”

Rare Bird Coffee Roasters roasts coffee in-house at 230 W. Broad Street and sells it by the bag. The cafe also serves a wide variety of espresso drinks and tea, along with scones, biscuits, croissants, biscotti and other baked treats.

The retail bay at 5870 Washington Blvd was formerly home to Westover Cleaners.
