Parking reductions at National Airport go into effect next week

A sizeable portion of Reagan National Airport’s economy parking lot will be closed for construction starting next week.

Beginning Monday, about 850 of the parking lot’s 2,680 spaces will be unavailable, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said in a press release. Construction is expected to continue into 2026, and at its peak, up to 1,100 of the lot’s spaces will be displaced.

The parking reduction will “accommodate construction of a new parking structure that, when complete, will add flexibility to the airport’s parking operations.” It’s unclear how many spaces in the new garage will be available to fliers.

“We don’t have information yet on how the new spaces will be allocated, once completed,” an MWAA spokesperson told ARLnow. “It is expected to include a mix of different airport uses, including customer parking.”

A variety of infrastructure changes at National Airport have been in the works for some time, including:

  • Constructing a new facility with a consolidated rental car center, public parking and corporate Airports Authority office space.
  • Creating additional public and employee parking at the airport.
  • Implementing ground transportation improvements “to enhance access to the Airport and provide access to these new facilities.”

The MWAA encouraged motorists to reserve parking spaces “well in advance” through the airport’s website.

“While we understand the challenges this project might pose for passengers who park at the airport, this construction is necessary to make improvements and expand our airport facilities in line with increasing demand,” said Bill Lanham, the MWAA’s commercial parking director. “We apologize for the temporary inconvenience.”
