UPDATED: Man arrested after bank robbery near Columbia Pike

Arlington County police and medics are on scene of a bank robbery along Columbia Pike.

The robbery happened around 11:15 a.m. at the Wells Fargo at 951 S. George Mason Drive. Initial reports suggest that a man in a black suit, fedora, and surgical mask and gloves passed a note to a teller and stole cash.

Police quickly responded to the robbery and one person was taken into custody at gunpoint, according to scanner traffic.

Medics were dispatched to the scene for a report of someone potentially suffering a medical emergency after the robbery.

The same Wells Fargo was robbed in 2013 and 2014. In both cases, the suspects were swiftly apprehended by law enforcement.

Update: On Feb. 26, the Arlington County Police Department released the following about the robbery and arrest.

BANK ROBBERY, 2025-02250083, 900 block of S. George Mason Drive. At approximately 11:18 a.m. on February 25, police were dispatched to the report of a burglary in progress. Upon arrival, it was determined to be a robbery by force. The preliminary investigation determined the male suspect allegedly entered a bank, passed a teller a note demanding money and subsequently fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. A lookout was broadcast and responding officers established a perimeter and located the suspect inside a neighboring business. He was taken into custody without incident. The stolen cash was recovered. Steve Smith, 30, of Washington, DC was arrested and charged with Robbery. He was held without bond.
