Snuggly mixed-breed dog Pickles McButterpants is looking for a new home and, thanks to a donation, his adoption fee is free.
The whimsically named dog is two years old and is described by the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) as very affectionate, though he would prefer to be the only pet in the house.
Pickles is currently in foster care and is, as of Friday, still available for adoption. We’re told he’s house-savvy and polite. He can be sensitive to household noises, however, and is looking for a gentle, understanding home to feel safe and secure.
According to AWLA:
Pickles would do best in a quiet environment with minimal chances to practice his big emotions when he sees the unexpected.
Pickles is a sweet, snuggly, and sensitive soul who’s looking for a person or family that will give him the patience, comfort, and love he craves. He’s affectionate, playful, and full of personality – from joyful wiggles to middle-of-the-night cuddle requests. This guy is a total ham for human affection and thrives when he’s close to his people.
Pickles has had wonderful days hanging out in the Evaluation Office and even spent time in foster care, where he continued to show what a good, trainable boy he is. He’s house-savvy and knows how to politely let you know when it’s potty time. He naps like a champ, enjoys snuffle boxes and busy toys, and adores treats (meatballs are a big win).
He’s alert and curious about the world – things like deer, squirrels, and other dogs may get his attention, but he’s already making great progress using treats, distance, and positive reinforcement. Pickles is also a bit sensitive to household noises (like fireplaces and appliances), so he’ll need a gentle, understanding home to help him feel safe and secure. Cuddle sessions help him settle beautifully, and he’s shown us just how much he loves belly rubs and quiet time with his person.
When it comes to other dogs, Pickles is definitely more into people. He can coexist with calm dogs at a distance, but we think he’d shine brightest as your one and only. Dog parks aren’t his thing, but supervised hangouts or tandem walks with the right dog could work with time and support.
Pickles is also one of AWLA’s contestants in a competition that could see his face plastered across the side of a beer crowler.
In case you missed it: a charity fundraiser organized by the animal welfare nonprofit and The Board Room brewpub in Lyon Park that will see the winning animal cat, dog and small animal will be posted on the face of a 32-ounce crowler brew being produced in August, with another randomly selected pet featured on a fourth can.
The contest costs $25 to enter and $1 to vote, with all proceeds going to AWLA. So far, it has raised over $25,000 — half of its $50,000 goal. Over 150 pets have been submitted, AWLA says.
The organization isn’t sitting on the sidelines though: starting next week they’re adding a pet from the shelter to each category. Pickles McButterpants is AWLA’s pick for the dog category, with tuxedo cat Molly getting the cat nomination and a flock of finches nominated for the small animal category.
