Whole Foods seems to be getting closer to opening a new location in Crystal City, though the store has yet to announce a date.
New exterior signage is up, and public records suggest that the smaller-format store at 1550 Crystal Drive — referred to as a Whole Foods Market Daily Shop — is making progress. The supermarket, which declined to comment on the status of the new store, confirmed its Crystal City plans back in January.
“We have no updates to share at this time,” a Whole Foods spokesperson told ARLnow.
It will be designed for ‘quick’ shopping
- Whole Foods announced its Daily Shops concept in March 2024, aiming to open the stores across “dense, metropolitan areas” in retail spaces between 7,000 and 14,000 square feet.
- The forthcoming grocery store is the first Daily Shop in the D.C. area. It will span about 16,000 square feet and replace a vacancy left by Amazon Fresh in April 2024.
- In New York City, recently opened Daily Shops sell produce, meat and seafood, in addition to prepared foods, “ready to heat” meals, baked goods and artisan cheeses.
Whole Foods awaits permit reviews
- A plumbing permit application filed yesterday (Tuesday) includes plans for a new produce misting system and a food bar.
- The store is also awaiting inspection for electrical and mechanical work, according to public records.
- A state license to serve beer and wine is pending, according to online records.
