The Goodwill on S. Glebe Road is closing this month to redevelop as a mixed-use affordable housing project.
The donation center, retail store and career center at 10 S. Glebe Road is set to close for about two years beginning on Monday, Oct. 27. Goodwill expects to begin demolition this winter, making way for a six-story building with 128 units of affordable housing, a 3,000-square-foot child care, and a modernized retail and donation center.
This is the first time the nonprofit has ever planned affordable housing and retail in one location, Goodwill of Greater Washington CEO Catherine Meloy said in a release.
“Through this initiative, Goodwill aims to tackle major barriers to employment: affordable housing and childcare, while also offering a state of-the-art donation and shopping experience for our community,” Meloy said. “While we’re sad to tear down the walls of this community landmark, we’re excited for the futures it will inspire!”

Goodwill and housing provider Affordable Homes & Communities plan to build 94 two- and three-bedroom apartments and seven units designated as Permanent Supportive Housing for residents with disabilities.
The new build is expected to add approximately 30 new jobs and include amenities such as a community room and fitness center.
The Arlington County Board greenlit site plans in February 2024 and approved $18 million in revenue bonds to support the redevelopment in January.
Goodwill plans to open the renovated retail store by the end of 2027 and welcome its first housing residents sometime in 2028.
In the meantime, shoppers can visit Goodwill’s retail stores at 4147 Columbia Pike and 6136 Arlington Blvd. The nonprofit encourages donors to continue bringing items to the following Goodwill locations:
- 5210 Langston Blvd, Arlington
- 2936 Annandale Road, Falls Church
- 7031 Columbia Pike, Annandale
