Man charged after accidentally firing bullet into neighboring apartment

An Arlington man is facing charges after police say he accidentally fired a shot into a neighboring home while cleaning his gun.

The incident happened just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 1100 block of S. Highland Street, just south of Columbia Pike.

Arlington County police say the 46-year-old acted recklessly when he accidentally fired the bullet, which entered an adjacent apartment.

RECKLESS HANDLING OF A FIREARM, 2026-06020201, 1100 block of S. Highland Street. At approximately 9:25 p.m. on June 2, police were dispatched to the report of a shot fired. Upon arrival, it was determined the male suspect was allegedly cleaning his firearm inside a residence when the weapon discharged, causing damage to the interior of the home and an occupied neighboring unit. No injuries or other property damage were located. Responding officers took the suspect into custody on scene and a firearm was recovered. [The suspect], 46, of Arlington, Va., was arrested and charged with Reckless Handling of a Firearm and Missile Into an Occupied Dwelling.

Also in the crime report, an 18-year-old Arlington resident has been charged after a wild incident early Wednesday morning in the Courthouse area.

Police say the suspect threw food at a woman after she walked into a store, then tried unsuccessfully to rob a man outside of the store. When the man walked into the store, the suspect allegedly damaged his car.

From ACPD:

ATTEMPTED ROBBERY, 2026-06030010, 1800 block of Wilson Boulevard. At approximately 2:31 a.m. on June 3, police were dispatched to the report of a robbery. Upon arrival, it was determined the male victim and female victim were entering the business when the male suspect allegedly threw food items at the female victim. The victims and suspect briefly left the scene before returning in their vehicles. When the male victim exited his vehicle, the male suspect, who was then sitting outside the business, demanded his cellphone. A verbal dispute ensued and the victims went inside the store while the suspect caused property damage to the victims’ vehicle before fleeing the scene in his vehicle. No injuries were reported. A lookout was broadcast and an officer located the suspect vehicle in the area of Fairfax Drive and N. Pierce Street and conducted a vehicle stop. The suspect was then taken into custody. [The suspect], 18, Arlington, Va., was arrested and charged with Attempted Robbery, Assault and Battery and Destruction of Property. He was held without bond.

In Tuesday’s crime report, meanwhile, police say a 34-year-old Alexandria man attacked an employee who confronted him while trying to steal items from a business in Clarendon around lunchtime Monday.

The employee was injured and taken to a local hospital. The suspect was arrested nearby.

ROBBERY, 2026-06010137, 3000 block of Washington Boulevard.  At approximately 12:19 p.m. on June 1, police were dispatched to the report of a larceny. Upon arrival, it was determined the male suspect entered the store and allegedly concealed merchandise and an employee confronted him. A verbal dispute ensued that escalated to a physical altercation during which the suspect assaulted the employee, causing him to fall to the ground. The suspect continued assaulting the employee before exiting the business and fleeing the scene on foot. The employee sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. A lookout was broadcast and a responding officer located an individual matching the description of the suspect in the area of 10th Street N. and N. Irving Street and took him into custody. Jerrell Smith, 34, of Alexandria, Va. was arrested and charged with Robbery and Malicious Wounding. He was held on no bond.
