Arlington loses another cookie shop as Captain Cookie shutters

The cookie is crumbling.

Captain Cookie & the Milkman has closed its doors in Courthouse, joining Chip City in departing Arlington’s market for sweet treats. A sign reading “retail space available” is posted in the cookie shop’s window at 2200 Clarendon Blvd, and the space is no longer listed on the local chain’s website.

Captain Cookie did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The business still has two locations in D.C., but it closed another spot in D.C.’s Cleveland Park neighborhood earlier this year, PoPville reported.

“In spite of a strong reputation and diehard neighborhood fans, we simply could not bring in enough revenue to support the astronomical and rapidly rising costs of labor, utilities, insurance and supplies,” the cookie and dessert seller told PoPville this summer. “We wish the next business owner brave enough to try supporting his or her family through a local business all the luck in the world, and we hope you, our cherished friends, will give them a try, too.”

Captain Cookie has been closed for a few weeks, according to ARLnow commenters. Chip City likewise closed its locations in Clarendon, Shirlington and Tysons Corner last month amid a nationwide contraction of the business.

Captain Cookie opened in Courthouse Plaza in early 2023, moving into a 700-square-foot space that was formerly a GNC.

The business started as a food truck by a husband-and-wife team in 2012. It opened its brick-and-mortar location in D.C. three years later.

Captain Cookie’s D.C. locations continue to sell treats such as chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, peanut butter and oatmeal raisin cookies, along with desserts such as cookie cakes, ice cream, milkshakes and ice cream sandwiches.
