Additional density and more corporate hotel rooms approved for Pentagon City

More corporate hotel rooms and up to 1.8 million square feet of development are on track to come to Pentagon City following votes last weekend.

An approved amendment to the Pentagon City Phased Development Site Plan would allow for the redevelopment of two aging office buildings just east of the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City. The change does not come with specific plans for new development, but tentative proposals call for up to 1,675 new dwelling units and 70,000 square feet of retail space.

Feedback sought on 1,515-unit RiverHouse development plan in Pentagon City

Arlington is collecting feedback on a plan to bring over 1,500 new apartments to the RiverHouse development in Pentagon City.

Respondents have until Sunday, Sept. 22 to submit feedback on a site plan application to bring 1,515 more apartments to 1111 Army Navy Drive, 1400 S. Joyce Street and 1600 S. Joyce Street. This round of public feedback kicked off on Sept. 9.

Monroe Park set to expand in $900,000 property purchase

The Arlington County Board has approved a $900,000 property purchase in order to expand Monroe Park.

This is the second such purchase the Board has greenlighted in the Douglas Park neighborhood this summer, following a $1.1 million acquisition of a property next to the Douglas Park recreation area in July.

Arlington accepts $20.7M for work on new Crystal City Metro entrance

Arlington has accepted an additional $20.7 million in federal and state funds as work on the new entrance to the Crystal City Metro station moves forward.

The Arlington County Board approved the hefty appropriation on Saturday. The Federal Transit Administration provided 80% of the funds, while 20% comes from the Virginia Dept. of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).

JUST IN: Amazon going back to five days a week in office

Amazon has announced plans to return employees to working in person five days a week.

The company, whose Arlington employees currently work from HQ2 at least three days a week, is “going to return to being in the office the way we were before the onset of COVID.”

Rock Spring culvert slated for $5.2M replacement

An aging culvert in Rock Spring is on track to get replaced through a $5.2 million agreement with the Virginia Dept. of Transportation.

The culvert on the 3800 block of N. Dumbarton Street “has reached the end of its useful life” and is currently “at risk of failure,” a County Board report says. It’s also undersized for its location, which sometimes causes the Little Pimmit Run stream to overflow onto the road.

Funding approved for Arlington history museum upkeep and historic markers

The Arlington County Board has approved several new investments in projects involving local history.

Officials signed off on a total of $65,000 in funding on Saturday for operational costs at the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington, facility improvements at the Arlington Historical Museum and the installation of 30 markers indicating where people were enslaved in Arlington.

Columbia Pike segment south of Arlington National Cemetery set to reopen next week

A half-mile section of Columbia Pike that closed last year for an expansion of Arlington National Cemetery is scheduled to reopen next week.

The portion of the Pike between S. Nash Street and S. Joyce Street will reopen in its new alignment “on or about” Monday, Sept. 16, ANC announced in a press release. The following traffic patterns will change.

A proposal to build a 187-unit apartment building at the site of an office building and two long-standing restaurants is scheduled for consideration this weekend.

A proposed site plan amendment at 1840 Wilson Blvd, near Courthouse, calls for demolishing the buildings housing Rhodeside Grill, Il Radicchio and the headquarters of the National Science Teaching Association to make way for a seven-story structure with 11,948 square feet of ground-floor retail.

Trail upgrades proposed at East Falls Church intersection

Changes could be coming to a segment of the Four Mile Run Trail in East Falls Church as a streetscape improvement project moves forward.

The new design, according to a staff report for the Arlington County Board meeting on Saturday, would create a straighter trail spur that directly connects to the intersection of N. Sycamore and 19th Street N.

Lightning detection sirens scheduled for testing Friday at Arlington high schools

Tests of three new weather sirens near Arlington high schools will be taking place this Friday.

The sirens — located at athletic fields at Wakefield, Washington-Liberty and Yorktown high schools — will sound a 15-second, one-horn blast and flash strobe lights. Under ordinary circumstances, this means that lightning has been detected within a 10-mile radius and people should shelter indoors for 30 minutes.
