Rock Spring culvert slated for $5.2M replacement

An aging culvert in Rock Spring is on track to get replaced through a $5.2 million agreement with the Virginia Dept. of Transportation.

The culvert on the 3800 block of N. Dumbarton Street “has reached the end of its useful life” and is currently “at risk of failure,” a County Board report says. It’s also undersized for its location, which sometimes causes the Little Pimmit Run stream to overflow onto the road.

Funding approved for Arlington history museum upkeep and historic markers

The Arlington County Board has approved several new investments in projects involving local history.

Officials signed off on a total of $65,000 in funding on Saturday for operational costs at the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington, facility improvements at the Arlington Historical Museum and the installation of 30 markers indicating where people were enslaved in Arlington.

Columbia Pike segment south of Arlington National Cemetery set to reopen next week

A half-mile section of Columbia Pike that closed last year for an expansion of Arlington National Cemetery is scheduled to reopen next week.

The portion of the Pike between S. Nash Street and S. Joyce Street will reopen in its new alignment “on or about” Monday, Sept. 16, ANC announced in a press release. The following traffic patterns will change.

New 187-unit apartment building near Courthouse slated for County Board consideration

A proposal to build a 187-unit apartment building at the site of an office building and two long-standing restaurants is scheduled for consideration this weekend.

A proposed site plan amendment at 1840 Wilson Blvd, near Courthouse, calls for demolishing the buildings housing Rhodeside Grill, Il Radicchio and the headquarters of the National Science Teaching Association to make way for a seven-story structure with 11,948 square feet of ground-floor retail.

Trail upgrades proposed at East Falls Church intersection

Changes could be coming to a segment of the Four Mile Run Trail in East Falls Church as a streetscape improvement project moves forward.

The new design, according to a staff report for the Arlington County Board meeting on Saturday, would create a straighter trail spur that directly connects to the intersection of N. Sycamore and 19th Street N.

Lightning detection sirens scheduled for testing Friday at Arlington high schools

Tests of three new weather sirens near Arlington high schools will be taking place this Friday.

The sirens — located at athletic fields at Wakefield, Washington-Liberty and Yorktown high schools — will sound a 15-second, one-horn blast and flash strobe lights. Under ordinary circumstances, this means that lightning has been detected within a 10-mile radius and people should shelter indoors for 30 minutes.

Discarded marijuana joints in local parks are raising some concerns about the safety of Arlingtonians’ furry friends.

“In some of Arlington’s parks we need to be more vigilant to protect our dogs from accidental marijuana ingestion,” Ann Marie Douglass wrote in an article for the Arlington Neighborhood News Exchange, which distributes resident-written content to civic association newsletters across the county.

Ceremonies in memory of 9/11 victims scheduled tomorrow in Arlington

Ceremonies in remembrance of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks will be taking place in Arlington tomorrow.

A wreath-laying ceremony hosted by the county will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Bozman Government Center in Courthouse.

Arlington drops to second most educated ‘city’ in America

Arlington has fallen from No. 1 to No. 2 in a ranking of the most educated “cities” in the country.

The new ranking from Forbes Advisor spotlights Arlington’s status as having the nation’s highest percentage of residents aged 25 and older with bachelor’s degrees and graduate degrees — 78% and 43%, respectively. That’s a hair above last year’s percentages of 76% and 42%.

Despite Vision Zero failure in D.C., Arlington still targets no traffic deaths by 2030

Despite a recent investigation unearthing broad failures in a decade-long D.C. program to eliminate traffic deaths, Arlington is holding fast to its Vision Zero goals.

Both Arlington and D.C. have set goals of eradicating all vehicle crashes resulting in fatalities and severe injuries. D.C. adopted its Vision Zero Action Plan in 2014 with the aim of achieving this by 2024, and Arlington adopted its own action plan in 2021 with a 2030 goalpost.
