Get ready for a windy and wild Sunday.
After a rain start to the weekend, winds are expected to whip up with the arrival of a cold front. Sustained winds up to 30 mph and gusts up to 60 mph, combined with the soggy conditions, could fell trees and large branches.
Arlington and much of the D.C. area is under a Wind Advisory tonight (Thursday).
The advisory, in effect until 10 p.m., warns of gusts up to 50 mph potentially leading to downed trees and power outages.

A few freezing sprinkles or additional flurries are possible this morning, forecasters say, but temperatures are set to rise above freezing in a couple of hours. The warm up, combined with expected rain tonight, should melt much of the 5-6 inches of snow that fell yesterday. Tomorrow’s high of 54 should finish the job.
In case there was any doubt, Wednesday will be a snow day for local students.
Arlington Public Schools and Falls Church City Public Schools both announced that schools will be closed tomorrow due to the ongoing winter storm. They join Alexandria, Fairfax County and other D.C. area districts in making that call.
Snow is continuing to fall in Arlington, as most roads remain at least partially snow-covered.
The snowy conditions — some 5-7 inches are expected to fall by the time the storm wraps up Wednesday morning — have caused major issues on the roads.
Arlington and the rest of the D.C. area are gearing up for significant snowfall.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning this afternoon, to take effect at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Some 4-8 inches of snow are expected to fall by the time the flakes taper off Wednesday morning.

It’s going to be a slippery Saturday in Arlington and most of the D.C. area.
Snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected throughout much of the day, starting with snow in the morning. The frozen precipitation is expected to make travel tricky, though temperatures are expected to remain above freezing during most of the storm and an overnight refreeze is not currently expected.
Brine lines and road salt are still being applied to county streets and state highways across Arlington, in advance of tonight’s wintry weather.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday, for expected sleet and freezing rain.
