The death of an Arlington civic leader earlier this year closed the history books on one of the most interesting political campaigns in county history.

News

Arlington Democrats traveled deep in the heart of Texas, by telephone, adding their efforts to the contentious U.S. Senate race there.

A dozen volunteers on Aug. 6 spent 90 minutes making calls to prospective Texas voters, gauging their views on the issues and working to convince them to support Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico.

News

With a contentious primary season behind them, county Democrats have settled on a strategy for the general election.

Without taking local races for granted, the party plans to use its organizational muscle to support Democratic candidates in battleground elections statewide and nationally.

News

An independent candidate with a background in local activism has entered the race for Arlington treasurer.

Aasim Rawoot is a familiar face for those familiar with County Board meetings, where he has often joined other activists in calling for county leaders to take a stronger stance on the conflict in Palestine. He has filed his candidacy against Kim Rucker, the former chief deputy treasurer who became treasurer last month following Carla de la Pava’s retirement.

News

Arlington Democrats supported Kim Rucker’s bid for county treasurer and five county bond referendums in a vote yesterday (Wednesday).

Voice votes were taken at the monthly Democratic meeting, and in both cases appeared unanimous.

News

Arlington Democrats and Republicans will each gather tonight (Wednesday) to dissect last night’s primary results and plot road maps to the Nov. 3 general election.

The meetings follow local primaries that played out mostly as expected.

News

Arlington Democrats appear to have their nominee for the upcoming special election for treasurer, while Republicans are seeking to recruit a challenger.

Kim Rucker, who became treasurer upon incumbent Carla de la Pava’s retirement earlier this month, was the only candidate to file for the Democratic endorsement, Democratic officials told ARLnow.

News

County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti says he is providing steady leadership in uncertain times, while primary challengers say he has much to answer for.

Julie Farnam and James DeVita are attempting to unseat de Ferranti in the primary next Tuesday, Aug. 4. The winner becomes the odds-on favorite in the Nov. 3 general election against independents Audrey Clement and David Sisson.

News

Arlington Republicans are being encouraged by party leadership to cast ballots in next Tuesday’s U.S. Senate primary.

While the campaign involving Republicans Bert Mizusawa, Kim Farington and David Williams has flown largely under the radar in mostly Democratic Northern Virginia, participating in the selection of a nominee is important, GOP Chair Matthew Hurtt said.

News

With just one week to go until the primary, the four challengers to U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D-8) are trying to stand out from the crowd.

Lorena Bruner, Michael Duffin, Adam Dunigan and Mo Seifeldein are attempting to overtake Beyer in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, Aug. 4. Beyer was first elected to Congress in 2014.

News

Virginia voters may get a say in picking the next Democratic presidential nominee before most of the country does.

The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee voted today (Friday) to give the Commonwealth one of six spots in the early window of the party’s 2028 presidential nominating calendar. Virginia would go last of the six, on Feb. 29, 2028 — leap day.

News

All five candidates running for County Board say they will protect the Barcroft Sports & Fitness Center and its gymnastics programming from elimination.

Candidate James DeVita said that, if elected, he “absolutely” would support both.
