Golfers from two Arlington high school teams recently participated in a competition, aiming to advance in the qualifying process to earn a spot to play in this summer’s U.S. Open championship in Pennsylvania.

Finn Watson from Washington-Liberty High School and Logan Reilly from Bishop O’Connell High played in the U.S. Open 18-hole local qualifying tournament at Northwest Golf Course near Silver Spring.

May 15 will not soon be forgotten for high-school baseball in Arlington — but for the wrong reasons.

All four squads suffered season-ending losses that Thursday in first-round tournament action. In a matter of a five-hour stretch, the county’s high-school baseball season was all over.

Highlights were few for Arlington crew teams at famous, but this year weather-shortened, Stotesbury Cup Regatta.

Storms, heavy rain and dangerous water conditions on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia caused the semifinal and championship races to be canceled. Only the first-round heats were held.

With three senior athletes combining to win seven events and as many as 11 others scoring team points, the Washington-Liberty Generals were big winners in the boys Liberty District track-and-field championships.

The Generals were first with 171 points, far more than the runner-up and host Wakefield Warriors with 114 in the high-school competition spread over two different weeks.

The spring high-school sports season for Arlington’s private-school Bishop O’Connell Knights is complete, while the county’s three public-school teams are competing in region-playoff action over the next week.

The Wakefield Warriors, Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots all have teams or athletes entered in individual and team region competition, with one team playing in a district-tournament championship game Friday, May 23.

Arlington’s long and proud history in high-school crew was embellished at this spring’s second weekend of the state-champion regatta.

That’s when two varsity eight girls and boys shells from Arlington schools finished first in the premier races at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association competition on the Occoquan Reservoir.

The Yorktown Patriots’ latest victory over the Washington-Liberty Generals in baseball action accomplished two things.

The 7-2 win extended Yorktown’s long winning streak over its Arlington rival to 16 games, starting with a victory during the 2017 high-school season.

A number of former standout softball players on high school teams from Arlington continue having success participating in the women’s college sport this spring.

Washington-Liberty High graduate Bridget Bartz batted .353, hit two home runs and had 18 RBI for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The junior starting shortstop had 30 hits, including six doubles, and played in 32 games. Her two home runs came in the same contest.

Nearly 40 players from Arlington high schools were chosen to the various girls and boys all-Liberty District lacrosse teams for their performances during the spring season.

On the girls side, multiple players from the undefeated and defending Class 6 state-champion Yorktown Patriots were selected to first and second teams and honorable mention.


Schools

Washington-Liberty High School Principal Tony Hall is stepping down to take a new, unnamed leadership job within Arlington Public Schools.

In a message to the Washington-Liberty High School community, Hall said he will continue serving the Arlington community in a different capacity.


Sports

There was a game-within-a-game when the Washington-Liberty Generals and Wakefield Warriors met recently in a girls varsity high-school lacrosse match.

In that all-Arlington clash, twin freshman sisters Addison and Emily Schimmel played for opposite teams. Addison was a member of the W-L squad and Emily was in uniform for host Wakefield.
