Farmers Markets Canceled Due to Heat

by ARLnow.com | June 9, 2011 at 12:03 pm | 1,461 views | 10 Comments

Due to today’s heat advisory, two local farmers markets have been nixed.

The sweltering temperatures have prompted organizers of both the Ballston Farmers Market — held every Thursday in Welburn Square — and the Rosslyn Farmers Market — held Thursdays at the corner of Wilson Boulevard and N. Oak Street — to cancel.

Temperatures are expected to come close to the 100 degree mark today.

Oh for cryin out loud. If the nouveau urban farmer and their patrons can’t handle a little heat, that does not bode well for the chicken lobbyists.

Man, if only the Westover Farmer’s Market was around.

this is embarassing. It’s hot, but not that bad – get some water, a hat, shades and light colored clothing and we will survive.

Today’s been wickedly hot – feel sorry for the farmers hoping to sell produce.

Just got back from downtown and the market on Vermont Ave. near the White House was going on as normal. Got some nice strawberries.

IMO, this cancellation was premature. The heat was was not too bad. I was in Ballston @ around 6:45 and there were two vendors there. One vendor told me that he found out about the cancellation after he arrived.

I was able to pick up some eggs and squash.

Hottest June day on record. Perhaps you should have been there around 3 pm, when the sun was still high in the sky.

Yep. At 3:30 I was out at the Vermont Ave market which was still open when I left work. Vendors were selling and customers were buying there.
I do not know if it was significantly hotter in VA, since I was not there. However, I believe that vendors should decide if they want to sell and customers should decide if they want to buy.
