VDOT Needs Residents to Check Trees — VDOT says it doesn’t have the resources to check all the trees along roads it maintains, so it sometimes relies on residents to tell them when a tree needs to be inspected or removed. VDOT-maintained roads in Arlington include Glebe Road, Lee Highway, Old Dominion Drive and parts of Washington Blvd. [Sun Gazette]

Art at Arlington National Cemetery — A new art exhibit at Arlington National Cemetery entitled “The Greatest Generation, A Visual Tribute,” is getting some help from amateur artists. About 500 people have contributed their own visual tributes to those who served in World War II on a “wall of thanks.” [WUSA 9]

Arlington Ridge Starbucks Opens Tomorrow — A new Starbucks Coffee store is opening tomorrow at 2925 S. Glebe Road, in the Arlington Ridge shopping center. [Twitter]

Melody Tavern Hosts Redskins Event — Melody Tavern (3650 S. Glebe Road) is hosting an event tonight to coincide with the season’s first Redskins pre-season game, against the Buffalo Bills. From 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., Melody Tavern will host a discussion with former Redskins Frank Grant (WR), Roy Jefferson (WR) and Darryl Grant (DT), according to a press release. There will also be a drawing for free Redskins tickets.

Does today’s pic have anything to do with a new county fair site?

    • John

It will never move there because of the late summer training for the high school varsity sports teams.

  • arlwhat

Ye gods I hope not. There’s enough problems created by all the running clubs that descend upon the track starting around 5:30pm. County fair showing up would require a reinforced onion loop on my belt and that’s not an expense I can absorb right now.

  • Jack

And the Starbucks! And the Starbucks! And the Starbucks!

    • Swag

      or the Starbucks.

    • WeiQiang

*sigh* the Starbucks and a dry cleaners replaced the Salvadoran resto. it’s a dark day in the ‘hood.

… and don’t forget the FROYO place going in next to Cafe Caturra.

      • KLB

Actually, it was a nail salon, not a dry cleaners, with the Starbucks that replaced the restaurant.

    • Mary-Austin

Actually there aren’t many Starbucks in South Arlington. We could use one or two.

      • Josh S

        Why?

        • SomeChick

          Because CC is too far.

          • DarkHeart

Not a fan of Rappahannock Coffee?

          • South Awwlington

No a fan of their staff…

  • novasteve

Wow, with that new starbucks I guess we’ll be needing another froyo place.

    • WeiQiang

      it’s already under construction

  • John

The tree at the corner of north Lexington and Wilson boulevard needs to be trimmed because its really hard safely make a left hand turn coming from carlin springs

    • VDOT

Thanks. We’ll get right on it.

(Oh wait, this isn’t actually VDOT. Your comment may actually just be a cry in the dark……)

    • nom de guerre

” VDOT-maintained roads in Arlington include Glebe Road, Lee Highway, Old Dominion Drive and parts of Washington Blvd.”

Wilson Boulevard is maintained by the County-703-228-6570

  • soarlslacker

I don’t understand the entire Starbucks thing. It is only coffee.

    • NoVapologist

      They support gay marriage.

    • Josh S

yeah, I could understand excitement about a Starbucks opening maybe ten or fifteen years ago. But the bloom is off that rose. If a murky coffee (or similar) opened in that spot – now that would be exciting.

  • ArlCommuter

There was a lot of activity by what looked like undercover officers at the corner of Washington Blvd. and N. Pershing this AM around 8:40. Looked like at least one person was in handcuffs. Any idea what was going on?

  • Elmer

If that flag picture was taken from August 6th through today, it is supposed to be at half mast until sunset August 10th by Presidential Declaration to remember the WI. shootings.
Curiously, that looks like a government building the flags are in front of or am I missing something?

    • NoVapologist

Per the date stamp on the photo, it was taken July 10th.

      • Elmer

Thanks. Didn’t see the enlarged version of the photo.

    • Andy

It’s in the same batch of photos as the girl in the purple dress doing exercises on the W-L field.

      • Elmer

Andy, You are either some kind of computer whiz or you have too much time on your hands.
        Good work though :)
