Crystal City to Resume 5K Fridays

Crystal City will be resuming its popular “5K Fridays” in April.

The neighborhood held the series of weekly 5K runs for the first time last year. Due to popular demand, it appears that 5K Fridays may become a yearly tradition.

The first of five 5K Fridays will kick off at 6:30 p.m. on April 2. The starting line will be located at 2121 Crystal Drive. Registration is $15 for one race, $50 for all five.

More information from Crystal City BID, after the jump.

Lace up your running shoes and start training for the 5k season with the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) and 5K Fridays. Every Friday in April at 6:30PM, participants will run a professionally timed and certified course organized by Pacers Running Stores. Every race starts and finishes at 2121 Crystal Drive. Be brave and run all five—competing each week to beat your previous time!

“The inaugural season of 5K Fridays was a huge success with a total of 2,500 racers registered over the course of the five races. It was so popular that we even had requests to do this year-round,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “Research conducted at the event showed that 75% of the runners stayed in Crystal City following the race and had dinner at area restaurants. The event promotes active lifestyles while making economic sense for Crystal City restaurants and businesses.”

Crystal City’s newest residential property, 220 20th Street, will host the start/finish line and provide water to racers, with local restaurants offering specials to give runners the opportunity to nosh (pre- or post-race). Runners can then shower courtesy of Sport & Health before heading over to the Concord Luxury Residences for a weekly post-race party featuring entertainment by DJ Adrian Loving.

In anticipation of the opening of their City Hub in Crystal City, Revolution Cycles will sponsor a Biathlon training ride and run each week and offer a TREK bicycle as part of a series raffle. Each time a runner finishes a race they will be entered into the raffle, which will drawn at the final race party. For those interested in updating their fitness wardrobe, Lululemon Athletica will be the featured athletic wear provider showcasing their clothing during the race and at the post-race party. And don’t forget to get out your best red dress! On April 23rd, 5K Friday’s will feature the Red Dress Run honoring the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest and best red dresses in both the male and female categories!

Each race costs $15 or pay only $50 for all five. Details and pre-race registration is available online via Pacers at www.crystalrun5kfridays.com. 5K Fridays are part of the Crystal City Green Scene which also includes the community Power Purge and Shred on April 21st and the Crystal City Farmers’ Market starting in May. Crystal City is green year-round, however, with its “low-to-no waste” policy at all events. Events use eco-friendly products (plates, forks, cups, etc.), compost bins, and active recycling.
