The Columbia Pike Construction Cone Slalom

Road crews are out in force on and around Columbia Pike today.

At Columbia Pike and South Wakefield Street, a contractor is laying down lane striping in the middle of the Pike. Traffic is down to one lane in each direction. The good news is that this torn-up section of the Pike has recently gotten a few patches of fresh asphalt to smooth out what were some pretty nasty bumps.

A short walk away, on South Taylor Street, an Arlington County crew is repaving a section of the road that was damaged by a water main break. The road is closed between Columbia Pike and 9th Street.

On the eastern end of the Pike, in front of the new Penrose Square apartments, cars are doing the construction cone slalom once again. One lane in each direction gets around on-going utility work in the middle of the road.

The potholes on Columbia Pike have killed my car’s suspension. I can live with it though, since it’s all for the good of a much needed facelift along the Pike.

Ran that slalom in a 14′ budget rental truck tuesday on the way to the value city furniture store in falls church. Woooo!!!!!

If they dig anymore at Barton Street they’ll find Jimmy Hoffa.

The slalom left me with a souvenir nail in my tire recently!

      Bad times.

Eh, didn’t cost much for me to patch it. A very mild pain in the butt. But I’ll have to avoid running the slalom again if that’s the kind of prizes they are giving out. 😉

Can’t wait for the Penrose section to be done!

It’s about time. I dread that part of my drive every morning. I’ve seen utility work done before in the same area of the road many times over, I have NEVER seen a fix/patch job that bad.

+1,000. The nightly patching through there is a freaking joke, particularly the turn lane into Barton Street. Can the county or someone (hint, hint penrose developer) add some extra lighting at night since there are no streetlamps on one side and no lines on the street either???

      • you mean the “turn lane” that only locals have any idea exists, so when you’re waiting at the light to turn left, you risk being hit by cars turning from the through lanes? i don’t know, i find it exhilerating!

when the construction is over, it will all be worth it…

        • Overgrown Bush

…worth it until the streetcar comes…..

          • local

It took you until 2:39 to make a crack at the streetcar?

See once Arlington took control all would be perfect.
