Arlington — as well as D.C. and surrounding areas —  is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch this (Sunday) afternoon.

The National Weather Service just issued the watch, which is in effect until 11 p.m.

Storms are expected to start early this evening, though the exact timing is unclear. Today’s hot weather will help to fuel strong storms, which could pack damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning, and torrential rainfall.

More from NWS:

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 11 PM. Thunderstorms are likely into this evening. Some of these may become severe, with the primary threat being damaging wind gusts and large hail. A brief tornado is possible.

The combination of heat and humidity will lead to heat index values nearing 105 degrees through early this evening.
