Arlington is again under an Excessive Heat Warning today (Wednesday).

Heat index values of up to 110 are expected, making time spent outdoor potentially hazardous. As a result, Arlington’s Dept. of Parks and Recreation has again cancelled outdoor programming between noon and 8 p.m. today.

Storms are also possible later today, starting in the late afternoon.

Relief from the heat looks elusive, with a rainy and cloudy day on Friday keeping the high temperature to the low 80s. Beyond that, the 90s return Saturday and are expected to stick around until at least the middle of next week. Triple digit temperatures are even possible on Tuesday.

More on today’s high heat and storm chance, below, from the National Weather Service.

…EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING…

* WHAT…Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110 expected.

* WHERE…Portions of central and southern Maryland, The District of Columbia, and portions of the northern neck of Virginia.

* WHEN…From noon today to 8 PM EDT.

* IMPACTS…Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Very warm and humid conditions will persist into the overnight hours. Ensure to stay hydrated and find ways to stay cool.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
