UPDATED: Severe Thunderstorm Watch, Flood Watch issued Saturday

Arlington and parts of the D.C. area are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and a Flood Watch this afternoon and evening.

The Flood Watch, issued early Saturday morning, is in effect from 3-10 p.m. Forecasters say multiple rounds of storms later today could pack heavy rains and lead to flash flooding.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued this afternoon and is in effect until 9 p.m., with forecasters warning of the potential for hail and damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph.

…FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 10 PM EDT THIS EVENING…

* WHAT…Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

* WHERE…The District of Columbia, and portions of Maryland, including the following areas, Anne Arundel, Cecil, Central and Southeast Howard, Central and Southeast Montgomery, Prince Georges, Southeast Harford and Southern Baltimore, and portions of northern Virginia, including the following areas, Arlington/Falls Church/Alexandria and Fairfax.

* WHEN…From 3 PM this afternoon to 10 PM EDT this evening.

* IMPACTS…Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…
– Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are possible from mid afternoon through late evening. Given the humid environment, thunderstorms may be capable of producing 2 inches of rain in an hour, with isolated localized totals of around 5 inches possible in areas where multiple thunderstorms occur.
