A welcome home ceremony for Olympic gold medalist and Arlington native Torri Huske is happening at the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center on Sunday.
Returning to her hometown after a record-setting performance at the Paris Olympic Games — where she won three gold medals and two silver medals in swimming events — Huske will deliver brief remarks and offer autographs and photos for swim fans under 18.
The event at 333 Long Bridge Drive will start at 3 p.m., but members of the public can start arriving at 2:30 p.m. They “are encouraged to welcome Torri Huske with signs and banners as she arrives,” a county press release says.
The event will also include remarks from Arlington County Board Chair Libby Garvey and Evan Stiles, head coach of the Arlington Aquatic Club — the elite local swim club of which Huske is a nearly lifelong member.
Free parking for the event will be available a nine-minute walk away, at Long Bridge Park, or along Long Bridge Drive. Huske is asking guests to bring non-perishable food donations to support the Arlington Food Assistance Center.
Huske, who was born and raised in Arlington, began swimming with the Arlington Aquatic Club with she was six years old. She graduated from Yorktown High School and set an American record at trials for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
She lost out on an Olympic medal by 0.01 seconds in Tokyo in the 100-meter butterfly, but took home silver in the women’s 4×100 medley relay race.
In Paris, the 21-year-old surged into her first gold medal when she edged out fellow American Gretchen Walsh by 0.04 seconds in the 100-meter butterfly. She went on to help set world records in the women’s 4×100 medley relay and the mixed 4×100 medley relay.
Huske earned silver in the 100-meter freestyle and 4×100 freestyle relay.
