After a few months of construction, three intersections of the Washington & Old Dominion Trail in Falls Church have new all-way stops.
These stops are now in place at the intersections of Little Falls Street, N. Oak Street and N. Spring Street. They were added in a collaboration with NOVA Parks to increase safety, according to an email announcement from the city.
The stops apply to all vehicles and cyclists crossing the intersections. Pedestrians should continue to follow standard crossing laws and “exercise extra caution when entering the crosswalks,” the city noted.
During construction, special paving and sidewalks were installed at each intersection to mark the new crossings. According to the city, each right of way on the trail is 100 feet wide.
Funding for the project came from localities and the Transportation Alternatives Program by the Virginia Department of Transportation. Improvements for the trailside and street crossings were detailed in the city’s Comprehensive Plan, adopted nearly a decade ago.
Originally completed in 1974, the Falls Church sections of the trail are used by over 1,000 bicyclists and pedestrians each day.
