Compass Coffee to open at former Slipstream spot in Ballston

Another Compass Coffee is slated to open a couple of blocks away from the local chain’s current Ballston location.

The new location will replace a coffee shop that just shuttered last week.

Following the closure of Slipstream — a D.C.-based cafe with three other locations across the river — property management at 4300 Wilson Blvd sent tenants an email saying that Compass will take its place.

“We are writing to inform you that Slipstream has officially closed, however, Compass Coffee will be taking over with a tentative date Saturday, September 21st,” management wrote. “While we wish Slipstream the best in their future endeavors, we are enthused about having Compass as a new addition to the building.”

The other Ballston Compass Coffee at 4100 Wilson is set to remain open, a manager at the coffee shop told ARLnow. The new location is expected to hold a soft opening before the end of September, the manager confirmed.

Compass Coffee has 19 locations across D.C. and Northern Virginia, including shops in Rosslyn and on Langston Blvd.

In opening the second Ballston location, Compass will ratchet up its competition with Starbucks, which has several nearby cafes: at 901 N. Stuart Street, 801 N. Glebe Road, 1000 N. Glebe Road, and 4000 Wilson Blvd, among other outlets in a hotel and a grocery store.
