Ask Eli: Most expensive homes sold in the DMV in 2024

This regularly scheduled sponsored column is written by Eli Tucker, Arlington-based Realtor and Arlington resident. If you would like to work with Eli and his team in Northern Virginia and the greater D.C. Metro area, you can reach him directly at Eli@EliResidential.com.

Eli and his team believe that your real estate needs should be managed by advisors, not salespeople. Their mission is to guide, educate, and advocate for their clients through real advice, hands-on support, and personalized service.

It’s always fun taking a look back at the most expensive homes sold in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) region each year (see 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020) so let’s jump right into some amazing real estate that changed hands in 2024 (Note: this includes what is entered into the MLS, it’s certainly possible (likely) that expensive homes have traded hands privately outside of the MLS).

The most expensive home sold in 2024 was a $25,500,000 McLean home built in 2022, perched above the Potomac River. It edged out, this incredible home in Washington, D.C., along Foxhall Road, that sold for an even $25,000,000.

Top 5 Most Expensive Sales in Arlington

Despite its high average cost, Arlington doesn’t have much of an ultra-high-end market like many of its neighboring jurisdictions but 2024 delivered some unusually high sale prices in Arlington, topping out at $6,400,000 for a 3,400 SqFt home on a .79 acre lot along the Potomac River that will be torn down for a new home.

Top 5 Most Expensive Sales in Virginia

The most expensive home in Virginia, built in 2022 along the Potomac River, is also the most expensive home in the DMV in 2024 at $25.5M for nearly 33,000 SqFt over five acres. The second most expensive home is a sprawling 2,000 acre estate just outside of Front Royal that sold for $18,750,000.

Top 5 Most Expensive Sales in Washington, D.C.

After claiming the top two most expensive sales in 2023, Washington, D.C. falls just $500,000 short of the top spot with a magnificent 2022 build on Foxhall Road for $25,000,000, earning the new buyer a masterfully built home with 16,000+ SqFt on just under 1.5 acres. The developer purchased the old home for $5.5M in 2017.

Top 5 Most Expensive Sales in Maryland

Maryland’s most expensive home did not crack the $10M mark for the second year in a row, coming in a $9.25M for a 15,000 SqFt home in Bethesda, the only Maryland home in the top five in the D.C. Suburbs. The next four most expensive homes sold in Maryland were along the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.
